It's somewhat heart-warming to report that Rare has pivoted all the way back to the top of Triple-A pile with ease. Make no mistake – Rare is back, ye scurvy dogs. Sea of Thieves deserves your undivided attention.

I don’t want to seem like one of those people whining about having an amazing job (because, really, I’m lucky) but it is true that one can’t quite help but spend a lot of E3 tired and grumpy. Appointment schedules collapse, it’s hot, it’s loud, your feet hurt, you’ve barely slept. In spite of that stuff Sea of Thieves had me grinning ear-to-ear like an idiot for my entire play session, and to me that’s bloody notable.

Have you ever wanted to have epic ship battles on the high seas with some of your best mateys? Many games have tried it, but none have truly nailed it until now. In my demo, myself and other players boarded our ship and set sail. As we left the dock, we pulled out some musical instruments and started to play a classic pirate ditty. While this served no purpose other than having a laugh and some fun, those are two things many games lack today, and things Rare has always been known for.

I can’t help coming back to my primary takeaway from my first Sea of Thieves high-seas ship battle: I had a gigantic smile on my face the entire time. That’s what Rare always used to be good at, and if they can recapture that in full with Sea of Thieves, then I’ll want to round up a band of buddies, form a crew, and explore this world with them to its furthest edges on a nightly basis.

Rare brought only a basic slice of its Xbox One and Windows 10 shared-world pirate adventure gameSea of Thieves for attendees to play together at E3 2016, and yet it still ended up becoming one of the more talked-about demos of the show. It was good, silly fun in a way that even the most jaded, tired, and overworked convention-goers couldn't help but warm up to.

A former sceptic has turned into a believer after our E3 2016 Sea of Thieves preview demo. It was the explanation of where the game came from and how aggression isn’t the focus that changed the faith in Sea of Thieves. Multiplayer focused games tend to get a bad name as players often abuse what the game is truly about. It is believed whole-heartedly that Sea of Thieves could be an experience that unities players. Often multiplayer based games plot Players against each other. That is not the case with Sea of Thieves and that is simply beautiful.
