Yeah they did. That's the whole problem, people did think. It felt like your were paying 499$ for hardware you didn't own, and you were only renting it. Which imminently brought on the effect of feeling trapped. If you explained what Microsoft wanted to 3rd grade school kids you would get the same effect. If they would have done that to begin with there wouldn't be a problem. Sad that the answer is really that simple, but it is. Take any project that has to do with gaming, and give it to a group of 3rd graders. If it's stupid they will tell you.
Stupid, .... Yes. Single minded, ..... Yes. But so are most of the people out there that play video games. When it comes to their money at least. Just a fact.
