PS3 Mass Effect 2 Using Mass Effect 3 Engine

BioWare has revealed that the PlayStation 3 version of Mass Effect 2 will use the engine they created for Mass Effect 3, making it visually superior to the Xbox 360 version released earlier this year.

The news was revealed on a BioWare podcast with Jesse Houston, the producer of the PS3 version of Mass Effect 2 (where they also announced the game has "gone gold," meaning it's ready for mass production for eventual release). "One of the first things you're going to see is improved graphics," Houston promised about the difference between the PS3 and 360 versions. "We actually created the engine for Mass Effect 3 and used that to make Mass Effect 2 PS3. So we took the content, the story and all of the other assets that made up Mass Effect 2 and we put it into the Mass Effect 3 engine."

Houston also promised other, more vague additions, including controls "geared towards the PS3 controller," "improved" planet scanning, and the inclusion of all the patches and bug fixes that have been rolled out for the 360 version post-release.

As for just how much better the ME3 engine will make ME2 look, it's a little hard to say (note that's an image of the 360 version above). So far all that's been shown of Mass Effect 3 is the short debut trailer during the Spike TV VGAs last Saturday (shown below), which, yes, did look quite impressive.

The PS3 version of Mass Effect 2 is set for release on January 18.

In dem IGN Preview Vid zur PS3 Version sahen die Gesichter etwas besser aus. Und die Farben waren anders. Kräftiger.... das wars auch schon.
