Hatt er es also doch geschafft. Er war ja immer der Meinung, das er keines natürlichen Todes sterben wird, sondern durch einen Killer der Mafia.

RIP, Lonesome George. :(

Some sad news today.. Lonesome George, the world's rarest living creature and last Pinta Island Tortoise (Chelonoidis nigra abingdoni, a subspecies of the Galapagos Tortoise) has died today, at the age of around 100 years old. He had been living at the Charles Darwin Research Center on the island of Santa Cruz for 36 years, and has been placed with females of a closely related species since 1993, in hopes of breeding them. Only last year did Lonesome George finally mate with one female, although the eggs were infertile.

There are currently around 20,000 Galapagos Tortoises on the islands collectively, but with the loss of Lonesome George we lose an iconic subspecies. There are currently expeditions to find pure-bred Pinta Island Tortoises mixed in with others in large communities, but has so far turned up nothing. Fingers crossed!
