Killer Instinct reboot is free-to-play, only one character is free

Killer Instinct is getting a reboot on Xbox One, courtesy of Double Helix Games . Good news: it’s free-to-play. Potential bad news: you have to pay for every character, except Jago.


Destructoid confirmed in this Killer Instinct preview, that while the fighter is free to all, you have to pay individually for new and returning characters. That’s a payment per character, but the specific cost has not been confirmed, so don’t start worrying just yet, as they could be dirt cheap.

Characters have two life bars just like in the original games, and big combos and Combo-Breakers are back. The game’s out at the Xbox One launch.

Killer Instinct developers clarify that only the demo for the game is F2P

Just mentioned now on the Mad Catz stream.

Developer said:
- All versions of the game are digital-only
- Only the demo is F2P, which was reported as only including Jago (presumably you can buy additional characters to add to this, F2P style, so it's not really a demo but that's the word the developer used)
- There will be regular SKUs with all the content
- Mentioned a collectors edition (which again, would be digital)

"Obviously, multiplayer is pretty core to what the game is right now, but when you think about asynchronous matchmaking, and I don't know if it really came across [during Microsoft's media briefing], but while you're playing your match, your next fight is being set up. So, you're literally just carousel-ing from fight to fight. A fighting game, given its round-based nature and how long the rounds are, is a great opportunity to showcase the asynchronous matchmaking."
