Showtime has unveiled castings for its upcoming live-action Halo television series, based on the best-selling Xbox video game franchise.

As revealed last November, the series will revolve around Master Chief, the helmeted super-soldier at the center of the game series. Pablo Schreiber (American Gods, Orange Is the New Black) will star as the Spartan commando. No word on whether Shcreiber's version of the character will remained masked like his video game counterpart.

Joining Schreiber is Australian newcomer Yerin Ha, who will play a newly created character in the Halo universe, Quan Ah. Quan Ah is described as a "shrewd, audacious 16-year-old from the Outer Colonies who meets Master Chief at a fateful time for them both." Ah was discovered during a worldwide casting search and is known for her stage work in Australia.

The Showtime series will follow plots set forth in the games, which focused on the 26th-century conflict between humanity and the alien race known as the Covenant. The show will "weave deeply drawn personal stories with action, adventure and a richly imagined vision of the future."

"[Natascha] McElhone will star as two characters -- Dr. Catherine Halsey, the brilliant, conflicted and inscrutable creator of the Spartan supersoldiers and Cortana, the most advanced AI in human history, and potentially the key to the survival of the human race," according to a press release from Showtime.

McElhone and Schreiber will be joined by veteran actors Bokeem Woodbine and Shabana Azmi. "Woodbine will play Soren-066, a morally complex privateer at the fringes of human civilization whose fate will bring him into conflict with his former military masters and his old friend, the Master Chief. Azim will portray Admiral Margaret Parangosky, the head of the Office of Naval Intelligence."

Per Showtime, "the series will also introduce three all-new characters to the Halo universe. Bentley Kalu will play Spartan Vannak-134, a cybernetically augmented supersoldier conscripted at childhood who serves as the defacto deputy to the Master Chief. Natasha Culzac will star in the role of Spartan Riz-028 – a focused, professional and deadly, cybernetically enhanced killing machine. Kate Kennedy stars as Spartan Kai-125, an all-new courageous, curious and deadly Spartan supersoldier."

Halo‘s long road to the small screen has taken one final turn. Showtime’s anticipated series based on the hugely popular Xbox video game franchise will migrate to Paramount+ and be available exclusively on ViacomCBS’ streamer.

“We were on the hunt for signature shows beyond the Star Trek franchise on CBS All Access and were thinking, what could be a defining series for Paramount+,” Nevins said. Late last fall, the top executives got to see first finished footage from Halo, which put the idea of a move to Paramount+ on an accelerated path. “Halo always fit the bill but seeing it, we felt it would work,” Nevins said.

He reached out to Showtime’s creative partners on the series, Spielberg and his team at Amblin as well as 343 Industries, the Microsoft-owned video game developer behind the Halo universe. Nevins got them on board with a pitch why Halo would benefit from launching on Paramount+. “It could be a defining show for a newish service that’s got all firepower of an entertainment corporation behind it,” Nevins said.
