Manhunt-style horror game Christmas Massacre comes to Xbox after ban

Surprisingly, after being blocked by Microsoft, the Manhunt-style murder game from Puppet Combo, Christmas Massacre, has launched on Xbox.

Last month, Puppet Combo announced that horror game Christmas Massacre would be coming to PlayStation after a successful run on PC, but not to Xbox or Nintendo Switch. When asked why the game was skipping Xbox consoles, Puppet Combo said it was "too crazy for Xbox" and that Microsoft said "no" when trying to get the game on the Xbox Store. Now it seems the developer has found a way around Microsoft's block as Christmas Massacre and another Puppet Combo title, Gates of Hell, are available to purchase for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, albeit with a catch.

If you purchase Christmas Massacre or Night at the Gates of Hell on Xbox, you'll notice that neither title supports Xbox achievements, and that's because a loophole was used to get the games on the platform. Replying to a user on X who asked why these two games didn't support Xbox achievements, Puppet Combo said that it used the Creators Program to publish the game on the Xbox store and that it "can't add achievements on the Creators Program."

"Those are ID@Xbox games, so they are officially on Xbox. These are treated as apps, so they didn't have to be approved and you can only find them if you specifically search their names. The Creators Program is meant for student games," Puppet Combo says. "It's petulant, but that's how the system works."

According to the developer, Microsoft will "reconsider if the game sells a lot, so buy day one." As for Nintendo, though, it looks like players on Switch are destined never to massacre people on behalf of a talking Christmas tree, it seems. "Don't wait for the Switch version of Christmas Massacre," the developer says. "Nintendo's decision not to release it is final, and I can't change that. No surprise announcement is ever coming."

If you want to play the "80s-inspired, core-drenched stealth slasher game with crusty, retro-style, low-poly graphics from horror developer Puppet Combo," you'll need to manually search for Christmas Massacre in the Xbox Store on your console.

As for Night at the Gates of Hell, the game's Steam description says: "From the sick mind behind Bloodwash, Jordan King, comes his latest experiment in terror. Inspired by the Italian zombie flicks from Lucio Fulci and Bruno Mattei, Night of the Gates of Hell promises to be a blood-dripping, neon-soaked, flesh-rotting experience." Just like Christmas Massacre, you'll need to manually search for the game to play on Xbox for the time being.

If we hear anything about the Christmas Massacre achievements or Night at the Gates of Hell achievements, we'll be sure to let you know!
