Valve hardware engineers and Gabe Newell come and share thoughts on the launch of the new Valve Index.

Valve is reminding us that there's still a place for high-end VR. The Oculus Quest might be cheaper and far more convenient, but it'll always be limited by its mobile hardware. With the Index, the VR possibilities are endless.
If there's a better VR headset for consumers, I haven't tried it yet. There is certainly room for improvement with the Index—most notably, I would like to see it go on a diet. If you have the money to burn, and you want the best home VR experience that money can buy, the Index headset combined with the controllers delivers a champion-level consumer VR experience.
In that sense, I'm torn. The Index does look a little better than the Rift S: you pay for that privilege. And the Knuckles remotes are more impressive on a technical level. But in a way, the Quest actually moves the goalposts entirely: I've been using my Quest more than either. In the end, there's no clear "winner," as VR has progressed to the point where pretty much everyone wins due to fierce competition.
For those of you who want the best and can afford it, however, the Index is the only choice. If you don’t care about price-to-performance ratios, then don’t hesitate. Go get one. The Index is the best VR experience you can have at home.
Do you have a lot of patience and want the absolute best VR experience money can buy? Is there already a ridiculously powerful GPU in your gaming PC? If the answer to these questions is yes, you should pick up Valve Index.
Valve's Index is best VR headset available, but its steep price tag makes it difficult to recommend over the competition.
The difference in price between Rift S and Index is vast, but so is the experience. I’ll have to end this, then, by turning the $600 question around on you — how much time are you going to spend in VR and how important is it to you that time be spent in a headset offering the most comfort and highest fidelity available in 2019?
The Index isn’t necessarily the “best” VR headset — at least, not for everybody. Unless the price drops in the future, it’s a product for people who play VR games very heavily, use headsets for professional work, or have a very large disposable income. But within those limitations, it delivers high-quality virtual reality with very few compromises.
It's pricey, but Valve's new virtual reality headset is the one to beat thanks to its crisp display and high field of view.
Again, sorry for the comparison. But I want VR to become more effortless and wire-free, easy to be immersed in. Valve Index isn't that. You need a PC. You need those sensor boxes in your room. There's a long, thick cable. It is, however, an improved set of hardware that the Steam VR platform needed, and those Index controllers are really great. I just don't know, at this point, whether it's worth your money to dive in.
Valve’s Index is a premium VR set for enthusiasts: those of us who have a powerful PC, the space to set up external sensors to cover a large area, and who want to experience the cutting edge of finger-tracking input devices. It justifies its high $1,000 price with a high-quality screen capable of a 144Hz refresh rate and a noticeably wider field of view, as well as controllers that strap to your hands and let you fully open your fingers, which it can track individually. It’s forward-looking right now so early adopters might not see its full potential for a while, but even now the Index is arguably the best way to experience VR.
