Joss Whedon has taken the genre up a gear, and it's a non-stop thrill ride you won't want to end.
Superhero onslaught on the Avengers Assemble is simply irresistible
It took nearly a half-century to make it happen onscreen, but The Avengers was worth the wait, pairing together the perfect cast and perfect writer/director.
But The Avengers is one of the greatest superhero films ever made. It's smart, fast, unrelenting fun. An instant, nuanced classic.
Marvel's 'The Avengers' Is Immensely Satisfying, Entirely Thrilling & Possibly The Best Superhero Movie Yet
"The Avengers" should never have worked. Too many characters, too many egos, an inexperienced director, an interference-happy studio. That it works as well as it does -- that it's as satisfying a tentpole movie as you could hope for -- is something close to a miracle.
It's clamorous, the save-the-world story is one everyone's seen time and again, and the characters have been around for more than half a century in 500 comic book issues. But Whedon and his cohorts have managed to stir all the personalities and ingredients together so that the resulting dish, however familiar, is irresistibly tasty again. A quick coda reveals, to well-versed fans at least, who the new adversary in the next installment will be, underlining a reality as absolute as the turning of Earth: Especially after this, Marvel movies will go on and on and on.
Big, brash and very funny, Joss Whedon’s Avengers Assemble is equal to the sum of its parts – and for once, that’s no faint praise. Suit up.

One final way to possibly describe “The Avengers”: it has the clever comedy of Joss Whedon, mixed with action sequences that would put Michael Bay to shame and the heart and sincerity of “E.T.: The Extraterrestrial.” Marvel’s “The Avengers” is one of their best films yet — right on mark with “Iron Man” — and it showcases all the hard work they have put into this unprecedented collaboration of superheroes on the big screen. It is a must see for everyone and you don’t have to be familiar with these characters to enjoy it, you will know and love them by the end of the film.
Go see Marvel’s “The Avengers” and be a part of the film that is sure to dominate the summer box office.
If there is one thing better than a super-cool superhero movie, it is an all-action special effects romp that features a grandstanding team-up of ALL your favourite superheroes slugging it out with a mean alien invasion.
And boy does Avengers Assemble deliver! Director and screenwriter Joss Whedon (already a fan-boy favourite for his TV creations Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly) has come up with a smart, witty (there are, amazingly for the genre, some real laugh-out loud moments, mainly involving the Hulk) and action-packed movie that manages to weave together a whole bunch of storylines and costume-character egos and come up with something special.

While long and over-complex, the film delivers fantastic superhero entertainment.
As a long time comic book fan ‘The Avengers’ is a dream come true and I can honestly say that I am so happy to have witnessed it. My future children will have to compete with the film for my love and attention.
So with this review I add to the global group hug for ‘The Avengers’ and can’t wait for the next phase of Marvel’s plan that kicks into gear only minutes after the credits roll.

Note: For those wondering about the 3D, it's fine. This was a planned conversion - not shot in 3D, but with Whedon and the studio always knowing it would be converted after the fact, so at least shots could be conceived with that in mind. I found the 3D to be decent and at least not too distracting (as I find to often be the case), but certainly not necessary. If you see it in 2D, you'll save some bucks and can enjoy this great movie on its own.
