Statements
Games are increasingly going digital - everyone knows that. In the meantime, the retail sales report for July from NPD painted quite an ugly picture. The industry was down 26% to $707.7 million, as software fell 17% to $336.2 million and hardware dropped 29% to $229 million. Accessories also dipped 8% to $127.8 million.

With the exception of EA Sports' NCAA Football, there weren't many top new releases during a slow summer month. The result was one of the lowest months for the U.S. games business in nearly five years.

“There is no getting around the fact that video game sales in the new physical retail channel suffered its lowest month since October 2006," noted NPD analyst Anita Frazier. "Despite the very rough month, new physical retail sales are down just 4% year-to-date and based on seasonality trends observed over the last 10 years, which have been remarkably stable year-in, year-out, industry sales in this particular channel are poised to land in the flat to -2% range once the total year is completed.”

Frazier also pointed out that digital is indeed helping to make up for lost physical sales. “New physical retail sales of hardware, software and accessories accounted for 69% of the total consumer spend on the industry in Q1. We have measured some remarkable growth in other ways that consumers are acquiring content, including digital sales of full games and add-on content, mobile games, and social network gaming. Growth in these areas, combined with a flat to modest decline in new physical sales should result in 2011 showing growth over 2010," she said.

On the software charts, EA's NCAA Football easily took first place. “NCAA 12 was the best-selling title for the month, realizing a 15% increase in unit sales versus NCAA 11 in July 2010. The increase in sales could have been fueled by ardent football fans who have to wait a little longer to get their hands on Madden this year,” Frazier said.

As for hardware, following months of huge momentum, Xbox 360 finally saw a year-over-year decline. “This was the first month that the Xbox 360 saw a year-over-year decline since December 2009. This is more of a reflection of robust sales last July, which was the biggest month for unit sales of the 360 in 2010 outside the holiday months (November and December). Last year’s sales of the 360 hardware platform were driven by the introduction of the Kinect-ready slim form factor SKU,” Frazier noted.

Frazier said that a year ago, 19 games sold more than 100,000 units. This year, only eight games sold more than 100,000 units. That was because there were so few new releases. Last year, 29 games were released in July, while this year there were only 17 releases. August could also be a slow month because EA’s Madden NFL 12 won’t release until Aug. 30 this year.

PR-Zeugs

Microsoft
Xbox 360 continues to lead the U.S. console market for the fifth straight month, selling more units in the U.S. than any other console for 13 of the past 14 months. Despite a slowing of console and software sales across the industry, Xbox 360 remains on track to have the biggest year in Xbox history – an unprecedented feat in the sixth year of its lifecycle.

July 2011 NPD highlights include:
· Holding 45% share of the overall current-generation console market, Xbox 360 sold 277,000 units in July, maintaining the number-one console spot in the U.S. for 2011. This marks the fifth month Xbox 360 has held more than 40% of the current-generation console market share. (Source: NPD Group, July 2011)

· Total retail spend on the Xbox 360 platform in July (hardware, software and accessories) reached $250 million, the most for any console in the U.S. (Source: NPD Group, July 2011)

Beyond NPD momentum, Kinect continues to inspire consumers in new ways. Kinect Fun Labs has garnered more than 1 million downloads in only two months. The worldwide gaming phenomenon “Fruit Ninja” came to Kinect for Xbox 360 yesterday as “Fruit Ninja Kinect” created by Halfbrick and Microsoft Studios. By the end of the year, the size of the Kinect games portfolio will triple and Xbox will bring new partnerships like UFC and Disney to the platform.

Sony
According to the July NPD, PlayStation peripheral sales increased by 18% year-over-year demonstrating a strong consumer interest in PlayStation Move and the Sharp Shooter. PlayStation will continue this momentum in the fall with the release of Resistance3, the groundbreaking shooter that combines 3D with Move and the Sharp Shooter. Our unmatched line-up of first-party software continues to deliver a gaming experience that can only be found on the PS3.

Nintendo
Just Dance 2 Becomes Eighth Wii Title to Sell More Than 5 Million Units

Just Dance® 2 from Ubisoft®, which plays exclusively on Nintendo’s Wii™ console, has sold more than 5 million units, according to the independent NPD Group, which tracks video game sales in the United States. With this milestone, the Wii system now has eight 5-million sellers* in the U.S., twice as many as competing current-generation consoles combined.

In the month of July, seven of the top 10 and 15 of the top 25 best-selling software SKUs play on Nintendo platforms. Just Dance 2 sold more than 120,000 units to finish No. 3 for the month.

“By crossing the 5 million sales mark, Just Dance 2 joins one of the most exclusive clubs in the world of video games,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “Nintendo systems have games for every type of player. We’re poised for a great holiday season, thanks to tremendous value across all our platforms and fan-favorite franchises delivering fun new surprises.”

During the next few months, Nintendo will release a huge selection of fan-favorite titles. This includes Star Fox 64™ 3D, Super Mario™ 3D Land and Mario Kart™7 for the Nintendo 3DS™ portable entertainment system, The Legend of Zelda™: Skyward Sword for Wii and Kirby™ Mass Attack for the Nintendo DS™ family of systems, which was the best-selling platform in July.

* The Wii titles to surpass 5 million units sold in the U.S. include: Wii Play™ (13.04 million), Mario Kart™Wii (10.64 million), New Super Mario Bros.™ Wii (8.36 million), Wii Fit™ (8.17 million), Wii Fit™Plus (7.06 million), Wii Sports Resort™ (6.45 million), Super Smash Bros.™Brawl (5.28 million) and Just Dance 2 (5.09 million).

Playstation 3: Preissenkung trieb Absatz sofort hoch
