360/PC The Witcher 2

I walked into a console demo for The Witcher 2 with these biases firmly intact -- only to find myself contemplating abandoning my current PC Witcher 2 playthrough in order to tackle it fresh on the 360. From the graphics to the controls, every change in the Witcher 2 came as a pleasant surprise.

CD Projekt RED personnel told me during the demo that the 360 version of The Witcher 2 would include around four hours of new content.

The PC version of The Witcher 2 included the option to play with an Xbox 360 gamepad, but it was far from ideal. Weird button placement and clunky targeting didn't make it unplayable, but it resulted in a steeper learning curve than necessary. CD Projekt RED redesigned the controls for the 360 version, and the developers seemed quite proud of the changes they made. There's no doubt that the new control scheme -- which changes the targeting, puts attacking on the A and X buttons, and switches the roles for the left-trigger and bumper amongst other changes -- will provide a better experience for console players (even if I spent most of the event unlearning the PC version's controls).

The Witcher 2 easily holds its own against the Uncharted 3s of the world. Whether it's "the best-looking console game" is a matter for fans to argue over on message boards, the important thing is this: At no point did I get that familiar feeling that I'm playing an inferior version of the game -- no frame rate hiccups like Saints Row the Third, no squinting at the screen trying to make out low-res objects in the distance like Battlefield 3.
