A Game of Thrones is high fantasy; although with a lot more swords than sorcery. It's a world of prophecies, exiled princesses, talking crows and magical trees. There's lots of death and lots of sex; the world is relentlessly bleak and war is hell. Showrunner David Benioff said a "crappy" tagline for the show could be "The Sopranos in Middle Earth". Crappy as a tagline, maybe, but as a show description that sounds pretty accurate. And pretty awesome.

Charles Dance cast as Tywin
Chalk up another one to the fans. Esteemed British actor, and fan favorite, Charles Dance has been cast as Tywin Lannister in HBO’s Game of Thrones according to Maureen Ryan of the Chicago Tribune.

A Change on the Small Council
It saddens me to announce that we've had a casting change on the HBO series.
My old friend Roy Dotrice, who had been scheduled to play the part of Grand Maester Pycelle, has had to withdraw from the show for medical reasons. (...)
The role of Grand Maester Pycelle will now be played by JULIAN GLOVER.

You Guys Are Scary Good, the Sequel
The part of Shae, the camp follower that Bronn the sellsword finds before the battle of the Green Fork and delivers to Tyrion Lannister, will be played by the amazing SIBEL KEKILLI.

Three for Three
Dany's handmaid Irri will be played by AMRITA ACHARIA (spelled Acharya on some sites, but I have it with the "i," and she seems to be the same person).

Winter Is Coming... to SKY
(...)
The short version: SKY has bought the UK rights to the entire HBO catalog of original shows, past and present.
So, yes, GAME OF THRONES will be seen in the UK... on SKY.

Day 32: Tourney wrapped, Winterfell next
Well we’ve passed the one month mark of filming on the first season of Game of Thrones. This past week was occupied with filming of the Hand’s tournament. It sounds like they hit all the major points: Gregor vs. Loras, Gregor vs. his horse, Loras and Sansa, Gregor vs. Sandor, etc. It’s possible they may be filming something to do with the tourney today but it doesn’t include Loras or extras presumably.
Next week it sounds like they will transition to filming Winterfell scenes. Isaac Hempstead-Wright and Kristian Nairn have both tweeted about starting filming soon. Crew member Paul McAnearney tweeted yesterday about being “in Winterfell”, presumably doing prep work. (He also tweeted a photo that may or may not have been the same location.)
So that’s where we stand right now. Hopefully we will get some reports from Miltos Yerolemou (who tweeted about posting something soon) and Conan Stevens (who I suspect will post something to his blog upon his return to Thailand).

Lombardo talks up Thrones in Vanity Fair
HBO co-president Michael Lombardo was interviewed recently for an article over at Vanity Fair discussing HBO’s ability to garner so many Emmy nominations and wins. While he touches on many aspects of HBO’s formula for success, above all, Lombardo credits the great writing. It is in this context that he brings up Game of Thrones.
"Lombardo, for example, mentioned the upcoming adaptation of the fantasy-novel series Game of Thrones, a genre in which he’d candidly mentioned not being the world’s leading expert: “The fact that it was genre, i.e. a little bit of magic, in a world that is not in fact real was irrelevant to the storytelling. The human drama that I read in the page, the characters as scripted by David [Benioff] and Dan [Weiss]—I was hooked on the pilot after reading it, and I’ve done this enough now to know that doesn’t happen all the time and when it happens you need to pay attention to it. Because to have a great show, I got to tell you, what you have to start with is a great script. It was a great script.”"
Winter Is Coming: More of the same from HBO. Not that I’m getting tired of hearing it, mind you. It is great to hear that this story has resonated with the HBO execs in much the same way it has with thousands millions of readers across the globe. And kudos to David and Dan for being able to boil down GRRM’s sprawling narrative into a successful screenplay.

Thrones to be featured prior to True Blood finale
HBO has sent out an email and a tweet indicating that Game of Thrones will be included in their preview of upcoming shows prior to Sunday’s True Blood finale. Look for it to start at 8:40 PM. If it is anything like last time, the East Coast will get it before the West Coast. And Canada won’t get it at all. Thankfully HBO has assured us that they will post whatever they show to their site immediately after it airs. They’ve also promised a brand new Thrones promo image!
Winter Is Coming: There was no indication in the email of whether this will be a new trailer, a behind-the-scenes feature or just a re-air of the teaser. They should have enough footage to do a full-trailer, if they want to. Ran over at Westeros has heard that there apparently exists a longer trailer internally at HBO, but does not know if they plan to air that this Sunday or not. Personally, I’m hoping for a full trailer, but I’d also be plenty excited to see some behind-the-scenes stuff. I doubt they would just re-air the teaser, but I guess it is possible. Either way, we’re definitely getting a new photo, so only two more days until new Thrones media!
UPDATE: Ran has received word from an inside source that HBO plans to show some new footage as well as a look behind-the-scenes of Game of Thrones. Can’t wait!
