Following the not so hot Vol. 5, Vol. 6 is finally upon us and from what I can gather, Vol. 6 actually equals the complete Season 5, which wasn't always the case with previous releases.

Vol. 6 is more action packed and more violent than previous episodes with lots of fighting, bleeding, swearing and a good deal of sexual references. Some hard swipes are taken against religion, however nothing that South Park hasn't done decades ago. One might call it immature or trying to hard, but if you ask me, I think it is quite appropriate. This is a show for adults with adult themes and a very dark, edgy sense of humor, it is a show about a CIA agent, so he's bound to experience some dangerous missions that leave him a little bruised. If you're out to show comic violence, might as well do it with some consequence. And if you go with a family-unfriendly show, go all the way. I'm all for it.

Stan is as much of a prick as ever, insensitive and egomaniac, yet somehow the writers found that sweet spot where he's a complete dick yet still barley likeable enough to carry the show. He carefully wanders along the border between edgy and flat out disgusting but manages to stay on the right side of it for the most part. He is also a deeply troubled and kind of gullible person which is shown with a great sense of consistency this time.

His family is cast to the sidelines somewhat. Francine more often than not merely serves as a catalyst for events rather than a full character and Hayley suffers from a Megan Griffin problem in that her relationship with her father is beyond repair. So everyone kind of excepts it and rolls with it. The absence of Jeff Fisher hurts as well. So the side stories she gets don't make any sense for the most part, however more of that in that in the episode rundown.

Thankfully, the writers took a serious step back from Francine's ongoing descent into complete lunacy, bringing her closer to the family cornerstone she was introduced as. She still seams weaker than before. Gone is the foxy woman who brought her sexuality into Saudi Arabia full effen force. Too often she happily does what the men (including Roger) tell her do, there is barely a moment where she comes across as strong or independent. Yes, that fits perfectly well with Stan’s wishes, but that was kind of the whole point. Francine should not fit in with Stan's sexist, 50s attitude towards women. The entire three-parter Stan of Arabia dealt with that issue.

Klaus is barely even there. Granted, he never was more than a wise cracker on the side with no more than one, maybe two episodes of his own, yet to this day it seems like the writers don't know what to do with the character.

They do know how to use Roger, of course, and as always he remains the shows crutch. Every episode that focuses on him simply is awesome by default. It's the complete randomness and unpredictability of the character that makes him so much fun. Also, he is not evil per se. He just does whatever is in his best interest at the moment with virtually no regard for the well-being of anyone other than him. He enjoys life to the fullest at the expense of everyone else and that I can only have the utmost respect for. Frankly, doesn't he lead just the life we all wish for?

He also works thanks to the fantastic voice work of Seth McFarlane, who I strongly believe to be a horrible and unlikeable person in real life, but who I can't help but recognize as maybe the best voice artist alive.

With that said, let's lock at the 18 episodes on the three discs, this time rating them individually with 5/5 system.

In Country... Club

The episode features the relationship between Stan and Steve... omg, we've been here before, haven't we? All is not bad though, since the episode greatly mocks the American attitude towards war and veterans, all characteristics that Stan represents with so much pride. So when Steve is asked to sing the national anthem at a veterans day, Stan makes him participate in an reenactment of the Vietnam war, held at a golf club, promptly causing Steve to suffer from post-traumatic-stress-disorder. It's funny enough, but in the end, it's Steve and Stan, and Father and Son, been there, done that.

Meanwhile Roger is out to prepare for a payperview night, looking forward to Barbara Streisand performing Celine Dion, somewhat saving the episode.

3/5

Moon Over Isla Island

When Stan kills the emperor of a fake Cuban-esque island he has Roger replace him to sign an important contract with the US. Of course, in the mean time Roger enjoys his new found role as emperor. Roger good as ever.

4/5

Home Androne

When the family is out on a flight Steve stays at home and accidentally starts a CIA drone from his fathers study. Never mind that, though, because on the plane Roger goes nuts and in his best disguise yet takes the form of Stan himself. That image alone nets the episode a

4/5

Brains, Brains and Automobiles

To stop Francine from leaving him Stan keeps Roger, who tries to be more independent by moving out, in the house so he wouldn't be alone with his wife. From Rogers memories we learn how Biggie Smalls died. Some good Roger in there, but also a lot of annoying Steve.

3/5

The Man in the Moonbounce

Quite a lot happening actually. Steve learns about his missing childhood and while trying to recapture it he promptly lands in jail where he winds up again at Roger's mercy. Nice one... not great though.

3/5

Shallow Vows

Nice little comment on beauty and values. When Francine stops working on her looks, Stan rejects her. His solution, ultimately, involves removing his eyesight. Roger pulls double duty as Jeannie Gold and Valik, who likes to cut Steve. I too would like to cut Steve.

4/5

My mourning Straitjacket

Yet another example of Stan’s gullibility. Being annoyed by his daughters frequent visits to rock concerts, he listens to a few seconds of „My morning jacket“ and becomes their greatest groupie.
Not much more to it.

2/5

G-String Circus

A bit chaotic. The CIA needs to spent money in order to avoid budget cuts next year so they go to a strip bar. Here Stan talks a couple girls into running a dry cleaner before becoming a stripper himself.

3/5

Rapture's Delight

The closest thing American Dad has to a Simpsons Halloween Episode. Expect the unexpected. Saying any more would be a crime. Watch this episode!

5/5

Don't look a Smith Horse in the Mouth

Two funny stories. A race horse can't perform anymore because his mind is seriously in peril after being molested by Stan (you read that right). So Stan swaps his body with the horse courtesy of the FBI labs to win a race and threaten an annoying little boy in the most hilarious way. Awesome stuff. Meanwhile Steve and the boys deal with an obese neighbor.

4/5

A Jones for a Smith

Stan gets addicted to crack, refuses to get help and deals with an crazed out hostage negotiator when he brakes into Greg and Terry’s house. A ton of great visual jokes with the world's worst hostage negotiator.

4/5

May the Best Stan Win

Stan has to compete with a cyborg version of himself for Francine’s love... kinda meh.

2/5

Return of the Bling

Lord of the Rings parody. Roger nails the Gollum parody and we learn some interesting things about American history.
On the flip side, the short romance between CIA koala Reginald and Hayley, that starts in this episode, reeks of wrong from the start and only gets worse and worse as things progress.

3/5

Cops and Roger

Title says it all. Roger joins the police force... as a crooked cop, of course. An extremely and almost out of place violently kill near the episode's end makes one wonder if the creators weren't simply rooting out what the rating board would let them get away with. The following joke surely doesn't justify five repeats of a slow-mow, close-up head explosion.

3/5

Merlot Down Dirty Shame

After Roger kisses Francine he tries everything to keep this incident from Stan. His attempts range from burying both Stan and Francine alive to getting Stan to kiss a waitress who happens to have a crush on Roger.
Steve is being tricked by Klaus and Hayley to be having a lucid dream which results in him getting to school half naked and almost killing a girl. Good times.

4/5

Bully for Steve

Stelio... Stelio Kontos... … … Stelio... Stelio Kontos, Stelio... … … Stelio... Stelio Kontos, Stelio... … … Stelio... Stelio Kontos... … … Stelio... Stelio Kontos, Stelio... … … Stelio... Stelio Kontos, Stelio... … … Stelio... Stelio Kontos, Stelio... … … Stelio... Stelio Kontos... … …

5/5

An Incident at Owl Creek

The most embarrising thing happens to Stan when he cannonballs into a swimming pool even though he needed to go Nr. 2. His only way out now seems to be to move as far away from Langley Falls as possible. When that doesn't work, he seeks the help of the president. Surprising twist at the end.

4/5

Great Space Roaster

When Roger's birthday roast goes wrong the alien decides to kill the family off. Roger takes center stage and displays all of his qualities at once. Great images, nice references to the Alien movies and a truly hilarious first half.

5/5

Again, the writers take some wrong turns here and there. Who ever came up with the idea to make a fucking koala a key character and create an ongoing romance with Hayley was clearly smoking something very illegal. But in the end, it is amazing that almost all of my criticism concerning previous seasons/vol., especially 3 and 5, have been rectified here. Then again, I'm starting to sense a pattern here. I called Vol. 4 the best to date, only to be let down by 5 and now I find myself in the position to tell you that Vol. 6 has risen to be my new favorite season. I hope that's not a bad omen for the upcoming 7. Maybe now the creators are on crack... sorry, track, and keep delivering the goods. There is a certain unpleasantness to a lot of the scenes, but I guess that's the point. A harder, tougher version of the classic animated cartoon. Much edgier than The Simpsons, a lot better written than Family Guy and in terms of political commentary second only to South Park, American Dad seemed to have found its place. As long as they don't lose that place one year from now.

Then again, whatever they screw up, they still have Roger. No show that doesn't have Roger can compete with Roger.

6, 4, 1, 2, 5, 3
