Your Uncharted Movie Nightmares Are Coming True

Uncharted 3 director Justin Richmond got everyone's hopes up last week when he said that, contrary to rumours, Mark Wahlberg had not been cast in the role of Nathan Drake. Don't tell Mark Wahlberg that.

It appears that Richmond's "wait and see" pleading may have been little more than an attempt at calming down the game's irate fanbase over the direction the film is taking, as an interview conducted with Wahlberg on Friday not only apparently confirms that the actor is playing Nathan Drake, but that Joe Pesci and Robert De Niro are also involved in the project.

In addition to that, the star of Boogie Nights and Max Payne says they're "hopefully going to shoot it in the Summer time".

Scarlett Johansson for Elena in Uncharted?

Empire chatted with Oscar-nominated The Fighter director David O. Russell about bringing Uncharted: Drake's Fortune to the big screen, a discussion in which he mentioned he likes Scarlett Johansson for the role of Elena:

What is the situation with your Uncharted movie script? It seems such a natural game to turn into a movie...
The game is very cinematic; there's no question about it. That's what I'm working on real hard and I'm writing it as we speak and I'm really excited to make it. I'd love Mark to be in it, I'd love Bob De Niro to be in it; I love the idea of growing them into a cinematic family; I think that's a really cool idea, but... I guess you'll have to wait until you see the script.

What thoughts do you have about the love interest, Elena?
Ah, Elena. I've cultivated her quite a bit and I think I've added a lot of dimension to her so that's all I'm going to say. I love the woman characters and the more robust they are, the more robust the movie.

From watching The Fighter, we would love Amy Adams to play Elena...
Oh I would love that too, I love Amy. I also love Scarlett Johansson; there's a lot of great actors I think might suit. Hopefully, we'll see how it works out with everybody who are being scoped to do that role...

Joa, wäre ich durchaus mit einverstanden. :D

IGN: We were exited to hear you were working on the Uncharted movie...

David O. Russell: Oh yes, I'm very excited about that. It's hard to keep writing in the middle of an Oscar campaign, but I'm almost done with that script, and that's going to be really fantastic.

I think if we take that family dynamic that we have in The Fighter, and put that in terms of a grander stage, with a crime family that metes out justice in the world of art and antiquities. If you're the head of a museum, or head of state, you've got to deal with them, and they're badass.

They're like the Sopranos in some ways, but they have great taste, and they have a sense of justice.

I would love to do that with Mark [Wahlberg], Robert De Niro, and a couple of hot women, it could be very thrilling.

IGN: Do you think that it's possible to please the fans of a much-loved franchise like Uncharted?

David O. Russell: I don't think that you can please everybody, but I will tell you this - I won't make it unless I can make a great movie.

I don't think there are too many games you can play through that make you go - "Well that'll make a great movie." There's not a lot of references on it, so I don't think there's a blueprint that says you must directly translate the game to the screen.

Games are awesome because you're playing them, so that's just a whole other thing. I'm shooting things down and climbing over cliffs, climbing through rooms, of course you have that in an action picture, but if you don't have the characters, and the whole world that's really bizarre, I don't think you have a movie that really grabs you by the throat.

I want the gamers to be happy. I have total respect for the game. My kid loves playing it, I love playing it. I just want to create a world that takes it to another level, that's another amazing world that's more cinematic.

IGN: Of all the video game movies, why was Uncharted the one for you?

David O. Russell: Because it's centred around a family, and I like the combination of criminals and truth. These guys they're tough but they're working on this crazy case, and they can't do it without truth. I think that's cool.

IGN: Will the supernatural elements of the game make it into the movie?

David O. Russell: All I'm going to say - I'm not supposed to talk about it - but what's wrong with the supernatural?

"I don't think there are too many games you can play through that make you go - "Well that'll make a great movie."" - Ach was.

Uncharted Film Loses Director/Writer David O. Russell

Russell's departure calls into question Mark Wahlberg's continued involvement.

The Uncharted film being worked on by writer and director David O. Russell is likely to change dramatically in the future, as Russell has reportedly left the project.

That's according to Variety, which cites "creative differences" as the cause for his departure. It's not the first time the movie has found itself in this sort of position; last year, negotiations between Russell and the studio fell apart before he officially came on board later in the year.

Russell has worked as a director and writer on a number of films previously including Three Kings and The Fighter. The latter starred Mark Wahlberg, the same man chosen to play the role of Uncharted protagonist Nathan Drake in the film adaptation. He beat out Nathan Fillion, of Firefly fame, who had been the popular choice for the role. There had also been talks of Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci appearing in the film to play Drake's father and uncle, two characters who are not in the videogames.

With Russell now out, it's unclear if any of these actors will still be involved.

He...he...he :grins:

Neil Burger (Ohne Limit, The Illusionist) machts nun:

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune Gets National Treasure Writers

"National Treasure" writers Marianne and Cormac Wibberley have come on board to rewrite the video game adaptation Uncharted: Drake's Fortune for Sony Pictures, Atlas Entertainment and Arad Productions, reports Variety.

Neil Burger (Limitless, The Illusionist) is no longer attached to direct and is now concentrating on Summit's Divergent, says the trade. A new director will be brought on board once the Wibberleys finish their script.

The Naughty Dog game follows a descendant of explorer Sir Francis Drake, a treasure hunter named Nate Drake who believes he has learned the whereabouts of El Dorado, the fabled South American golden city, from a cursed golden statue. The search becomes competitive when a rival hunter joins the fray, then is ratcheted up several notches when creatures -- actually mutated descendants of Spaniards and Nazis -- begin attacking those hoping to learn the treasure's true secrets.

Charles Roven and Alex Gartner are producing for Atlas, while Avi and Ari Arad (the "Spider-Man" franchise) will produce through their Arad Productions.
