André Øvredal’s ‘The Autopsy of Jane Doe’ Is Smart, Clever, and Truly Terrifying

The Autopsy of Jane Doe is proof that Trollhunter was no fluke – André Øvredal is one of the most clever guys making genre movies today and he’s refusing to let himself get boxed into a corner. This is the kind of gem that gives you the fuel to power through a couple dozen lousy horror movies in search of the next great movie.
‘The Autopsy of Jane Doe’ Raises Mighty Goose Bumps

Unheralded and unhyped, “The Autopsy of Jane Doe” sneaks into theaters like a chilly treat among the Christmas comedies and Force-fed mythologizing. The first solo English-language feature from the Norwegian director André Ovredal — an infinitely more disciplined follow-up to his 2011 film, “Trollhunter” — this shivery tour through a young woman’s innards turns putrefaction into a puzzle.
THE AUTOPSY OF JANE DOE REVIEW
An unexpected, horrifying Christmas treat.

If there was only one word to describe The Autopsy of Jane Doe, it would be "effective." Featuring stellar performances from both Emile Hirsch and Brian Cox, the film marks yet another exciting addition to André Øvredal’s growing resume. It’s one of this year’s many unexpected, last-minute surprises that will hopefully avoid flying too far under-the-radar amidst a crowded month of intergalactic space operas and serious Oscar contenders.
Dark, gory new film is almost the scariest movie ever made

The Autopsy of Jane Doe implicitly trusts its audience to follow along with the twists and turns of its story, and never treats them like idiots. But it’s also a hell of a spooky blast of a ride, with winning performances and a building of tension that just does not stop. I fully expect this movie to find its way into the hearts of horror fans everywhere – this is one we’ll be talking about for years to come. With Trollhunter, André Øvredal made a very entertaining horror film with a limited budget, but The Autopsy of Jane Doe puts him in a much wider world as a filmmaker, and I desperately hope that Øvredal keeps making horror movies. Like James Wan, he’s exceedingly good at it. With The Autopsy of Jane Doe, André Øvredal has placed himself in this new generation’s group of great horror filmmakers. My generation has had filmmakers like David Cronenberg, John Carpenter, Sam Raimi, Wes Craven – let us now welcome the new architects of our nightmares. It’s their time now. Scream, if you like. It won’t do you any good.

For its first hour, The Autopsy of Jane Doe might actually be the scariest damn movie I’ve ever seen. [...]
But no matter. Whether you buy the wind-down or don’t, there’s no denying the power of this movie. When it’s on, baby, it’s ON, exploring death, decay and the mysteries of the corporeal and the ethereal better than any other film out there. And in this day and age when every horror movie tastes the same and nary do any of them have any lingering effect once the lights go up, The Autopsy of Jane Doe sets the bloody bar pretty high.
Klingt alles sehr gut. Hoffentlich findet der Film schnell den Weg auf deutsche Streaming-Plattformen oder bekommt eine greifbare Heimkinoauswertung.
