For those that have been dying for a new Left 4 Dead game over the past few years, this news should bring a smile to your face.

Today, Turtle Rock Studios, the developers behind the original Left 4 Dead, have formally announced the studio’s next project which is entitled Back 4 Blood. This new creation is being pitched as a new step forward in the “co-op zombie genre” and is said to be a premium title that is being built from the ground up to combine the best of what Turtle Rock made with L4D with new, modern technology. Additionally, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment will serve as Back 4 Blood’s publisher.

“We are thrilled to partner with the proven Turtle Rock Studios team on Back 4 Blood to advance the co-op zombie genre forward with innovative multiplayer gameplay,” David Haddad, president of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment said today in a statement following the game’s reveal. “The talented team at Turtle Rock has been developing amazing games together for a long time, and this is a great opportunity to work with them to create a new gaming universe built specifically with the large co-op zombie shooter community in mind.”

Turtle Rock’s Chris Ashton also spoke about the project saying, “It’s hard to overstate what an awesome opportunity this is. We get to return to a genre that was born in our studio with over ten years of additional experience and zombie ideas racked up in our brains. We also have some of the best teammates in the business at WBIE who understand our development process and are equally committed to our player-first mentality. We love being able to announce, so we can start working with the community right away.”

At the moment, other details on Back 4 Blood are still incredibly sparse, but Turtle Rock says it is focusing on releasing the game for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. A formal release window has yet to be divulged as well because of how early Back 4 Blood is in development.

Still, for anyone that has been asking for a Left 4 Dead 3 to transpire all these years, Back 4 Blood sounds about as close as we’re going to get to a proper zombie-shooting sequel. We likely won’t hear from Back 4 Blood for quite some time, but it’s exciting to know that it’s now in development.
