Also August 2016.
So I intended to compile a short list of rumors concerning the next BGS game for a fellow /r/games user, but as I started to write I realized it became somewhat lengthy, so I decided to also post it here for discussion.
What do you think? Is there is anything that I have missed?
Leaker who predicted Fallout 4 would be shown at E3 2015 and released in the same year (until then Bethesda Game Studios hadn't adopted the short announcement-release strategy) also said "Bethesda has a new IP in development. release late 2017. Space combat and planet exploration, not playable yet. It´s a Action RPG. I don't think the" late 2017" assumption is enough to debunk the source, since it was leaked in 2015 and lots of development issues & changes of schedule/delays can happen in the meantime.
Obsidian once had a project they'd develop alongside Bethesda that was a "Sci-fi Skyrim" back in 2011 involving aliens, time travel etc and was to be made in Skyrim's engine. Fergus said the project was never canceled and was probably just put on ice for the meantime. Curiously enough, the first Starfield trademark popped up around 2013, just a few years after they started discussing this project & right after Skyrim's development cycle ended (the last DLC was released somewhere in 2012, so judging from BGS's dev schedule they'd probably start working on their next project after that).
Not only "Starfield" trademarks have been renewed since 2013 (with the latest one being a few months ago) but a few weeks ago Zenimax filled a new one, mainly detailing all the type of merchandise that would fall under the trademark that Bethesda usually have in their store (bobbleheads, shirts, coffee mugs, wallets, snowboards etc). They surely wouldn't bother to fill such an application for a 2013 trademark if "Starfield" wasn't a project big enough to warrant producing such merchandise.
In a recent podcast interview Todd Howard has stated multiple times that their next project would be in the same style as their other games, but they'd "like to explore a different setting" from TES and FO. There was a spot where he's talking about how you forget what it's like to move (to a new house) or to have a new kid until it's happening again - all the stresses and minutiae and stuff - and he was using it as an analogy to describe what it's like to finish up a game. This one could be a bit of a stretch, but based on that I'd say BGS is in the process of finishing up a game right now. If their schedule is anything to go by, an E3 announcement + late 2018 release isn't something impossible.
Aside from the shelved Obsidian project, there was also a sci-fi game described as an "ambitious space combat simulator" called 10th World that was in development in the late 90's but was ultimately cancelled. It seems Bethesda has dabbled on sci-fi multiple times on the past but never got around making a game out of the setting.
Bethesda have been announcing lots of new things before E3 like ESO's Summerset expansion, Legendas Morrowind expansion or Skyrim VR for PC just to cite a few. It wouldn't make sense for them to reveal all that right now when they could simply wait two more months and announce it at their E3 conference unless they had something pretty big to show up instead and were confident it would steal the show for their conference.
Lastly, and this is more "speculative shitpost" than anything, but in their "E3 2018 conference announcement" video there are some patterns on one of the screens that could allude to ficticious themes like "time travel", "open universe" and such. Hmm, did someone mention "time travel" ?
