Homepage

25 years ago, the Atlus RPG uttered its first cry. Speaking of RPGs in those days, the stories in so-called “fantasy” worlds were mainstream. The Shin Megami Tensei series was released as an “opposition” to such a “common” world view, and the Persona series was released as its spin-off. Both series, even today in their latest entries, have always been made with the concept that it will be a counter to the times. And now, in addition to continuing the titles within those series, what will our approach to a new RPG be? That is, to challenge the norms of the genre gamers have been consuming for decades. The challenge is about to begin. We would be happy if you would stand by for the moment we began from zero and the moment we began our challenge from zero.

First details on Atlus’ new fantasy RPG, “Project Re Fantasy”
http://gematsu.com/2016/12/first-details-atlus-new-fantasy-rpg-project-re-fantasy
Regarding the goal of establishing a new studio

Hiraoka: “Originally, as a mid-term plan of Atlus, we had wanted to establish a studio with the goal of creating a new IP and aim even higher. In these several years, the people whom we could entrust with it always seemed to be busy, but we wondered if we can trust it to Hashino, who finished up Persona 5.”

Regarding Soejima and Meguro’s involvement on the project

Hiraoka: “Soejima is an indispensable member of the Persona series staff, but we don’t want his work to stop there. Meguro is the same. Both will continue to participate in the Persona series in the future.

“We’re steadily developing other titles behind the scenes, including the Persona series. We plan to announce future titles in the new year, without keeping you waiting too long.”

Why did Studio Zero decide to take on the fantasy genre?

Hashino: “Until now, since the time fantasy went mainstream, Atlus has dared to create series set in contemporary times and cherished its stance of aiming to counter the typical. The series works from Persona 3 an onwards are the exact products of such thought. I had always held the thought that I someday want to challenge the traditional genre and deliver a title uniquely Atlus.”

Can you give us a hint about the visual you unveiled?

“The visual we released at this time is concept art to share our frame of mind. The character in the illustration made for the cover isn’t necessarily the protagonist either.”

Another Japanese blog that got famitsu early posted with some new info.

- The new studios logo features a young boy holding a tarot card with the number '0' on it
- Direct Katsura Hoshino comment: Even though the current hardware it will appear on is unannounced, we are making this for those that like home console games and love Atlus games. It is going to take a fair amount of time to complete, but I will be doing everything I can so please look forward to it.

The magazine shows three pieces of artwork

- A dragon facing off against several knights with the subtitle: Creating new things by building off successful things from the past
- 4 people riding on a horse carrage together with a dog with the subtitle: bonds
- A young red haired elf girl and a young blonde haired boy riding on horses with the subtitle: adventure

Katsura Hashino gives more insights on Project Re FANTASY in Dengeki interview
https://www.rpgsite.net/news/6387-k...ts-on-project-re-fantasy-in-dengeki-interview
Dengeki: Please tell us how you’re looking back at your own works and activities in 2017.

Hashino: At the end of last year, I moved away from titles with the modern setting, and announced that I started developing a mainline fantasy RPG. Although we planned for the genre we’re working on to be ‘mainline’, we want Project Re FANTASY to be more than simply a nostalgic back-to-the-roots game - we're aiming for something even more than that.

We want to provide a new ‘mainline’ game to players around the world who have grown tired of the usual ‘mainline’. We’re steadily making progress on our work for that, but I’m having a fulfilled, fresh work with members who have the same spirit.

Dengeki: Please tell us a title announced/released in 2017 that interests you in regards to your occupation and along with the reason why.

Hashino: In regards to my occupation… in that case, that would be Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age. I wanted to think about a lot of things so I played the PS4 version. It had a high degree of completeness even from a developer's perspective, as it actually rides your feelings towards various things.

Dengeki: When you are producing games; and in particular RPGs, what would be the thing you’re putting the highest importance of?

Hashino: There ought to be countless features required in a good RPG. But ultimately, if I have to think why they have to exist for a certain purpose, in the end, I would think on “whether they can bring forth a specific nature to the title that will be remembered in people’s memories.”

If I’m rephrasing it, the most important thing is on whether we can aim for “a game that can remain in memories.” Because we think a lot of game fans should be the most delighted if they can meet a title that makes them feel “this [game] will forever stay in my mind” rather than just simply experiencing a transient pleasure.

Dengeki: If we are to split game creation into phases like the Conception phase, Basic Development phase, to Final Tuning phase, how would you split that personally? And also, which phase would be the most difficult for you?

Hashino: Conception, Basic Development, Detailed Development, and Tuning phase. I had both the same amount of hardship and fun in each of them. I need to preserve the images made from the Conception phase all the way to the very end; it can be likened to carrying a cup of water while trying not to spill it. Although the nature of the hardship changes with each phase, I feel like the nervousness is still there all the time.

Dengeki: Right now Hashino-san is producing a fantasy RPG with Project Re FANTASY. But when we’re comparing it with titles that are based on modern society, could we hear what you’re thinking right now about which points are different, or which ones are interesting?

Hashino: Actually, there is nothing different basically. That’s exactly why I think it’s interesting. While the genre is high fantasy, we’re constructing a world setting where people living in the real world can actually relate to. That sense of distance is the opening slit; that’s why I hope this can be a fantasy that can only be created by us. Please look forward to it.
